High current capability of resettable fuse

The high current capability of a resettable PPTC fuse is one of its most important characteristics. This capability primarily reflects its ability to withstand transient or sustained high current surges within a certain range without immediate damage or failure.

In practical applications, electronic equipment or circuits may encounter various brief current overloads, such as starting current, inrush current, or short-circuit current. If a disposable fuse is used, it will immediately blow under these conditions, causing the device to malfunction or requiring frequent fuse replacement.

However, resettable fuses, due to their unique material properties and operating principle, can withstand high current surges for a short period of time. When the current exceeds the fuse’s rated value, the material inside the fuse expands due to heat, increasing its resistance and thus limiting the current. This change is reversible: when the current returns to normal, the material inside the fuse cools and returns to its original shape and resistance, allowing the fuse to continue operating.

It is important to note that the high current capability of a resettable fuse is limited. The high-current withstand capability of a single resettable fuse should be determined by referring to its datasheet. In particular, pay attention to the Imax value of its electrical parameters. This represents the maximum current that the resettable fuse can withstand at 25°C. If the current exceeds this value, the fuse may be damaged and unable to automatically reset. Generally speaking, under the test conditions specified in the datasheet, the current withstand capability will be lower than this value. To obtain the specific current withstand capability of a particular model, it is recommended to consult the manufacturer’s engineers for detailed data.
